Instructions for the installation of a kitchen hood are usually supplied with the appliance. The following instructions are the main installation steps you need to follow once the ducts are in place. In Quebec, all electrical work must be done by an electrical contractor, member of the Corporation des maîtres électriciens du Québec (CMEQ).
Range hoods are typically installed at least 20 in. above an electric stove and 24 in. for a gas stove. For maximum efficiency, don't exceed 30 in. above the cooking surface. Be sure to check those details before proceeding with installation.
1. Prepar the installation
Check the size of the exhaust ducts. If they're 6 in. in diameter, use an adapter. To ensure the joints are airtight, use 2-in. duct tape.
Make sure you have all the materials required as per the manufacturer's instructions. Unpack the hood. Remove the filters and the bottom panel.
2. Remove the pre-punched plates
Remove the pre-punched plates that cover the electrical connections. They're located at the top or at the back of the hood. Note: for optimum ventilation, use a 10-in. tapered adapter (3º in. at one end, 6 in. at the other) for circular conduits. The wall needs to have been prepared for the adapter. Before proceeding with the installation, be sure the adapter fits freely into the vent. If you're replacing an existing hood, you may find the air outlet is in a different place depending on the manufacturer.
3. Install the adapter
Using two 1/2 in. self tapping screws, install the adapter over the opening you will have selected. Seal using duct tape
