Although there are general rules that govern the installation of doors, most manufacturers insist on delivering their products with specific instructions. An expensive door that has been poorly installed will lose some of it energy efficiency. As well, its mechanical components may, over the long term, suffer problems.
But if you choose to install a door yourself, get help as doors are heavy!
Install the door frame in its wall opening making sure you leave sufficient space around the door (3/8 of an in. on either side and on top). Note that studs on either side of the door should be double studs.
Make sure the threshold is level. If not, level it with wood shims.
2. Caulking the sill
Remove the door and apply a generous coat of silicone caulking on the base of the frame.
3. Install the door in its opening
Reinstall the door in its opening. Insert shims between the wall stud and the door frame at lock and hinges level. Use a level to make sure the door is level and plumb.
4. Insulate the door
Using a flat instrument, such as a wood shim, fill any spaces around the door frame with fibreglass insulation or low expansion foam.
