Home security
It is exciting to leave everything behind when it is time to go on vacation. Coming back home with everything in place and secure. Most of all make it a point not to make your absence obvious.
Good advice: leave the key to your house and a phone number with a neighbour you trust or a family member. If need be, they'll have the means to take quick action.
Lock all windows. Windows fitted with reliable catches or locks are generally sufficient. It is recommended to close the curtains and blinds, it also controls the house temperature especially for the windows on the south and west sides.
Interrupt all deliveries
Interrupt mail delivery through your post office. Do the same for newspapers and flyers by contacting the distributors.
Leave discreetly
Leave your house discreetly. Back the car up the driveway or the garage to load your luggage.
Double-cylinder locks are safer
Equip all your outer doors with double-cylinder locks, including the garage door. This type of lock requires the use of a key both inside and outside. When inside, be cautious and leave the inside key on the lock or close by. Replace locks in a newly acquired house. Install a padlock at the end of the sliding rail of the garage door to improve security.
