The kitchen

When you think of the little time that we have to prepare, and gulp down, our meals these days, a functional and well-organized kitchen is a must.

Before making any changes to the kitchen, it’s important to stop and examine the habits of your entire family, the way they prepare and eat their meals, the instruments that they use the most, the available storage space and the ways to maximize these spaces when there’s not enough.
If lack of time is the main factor that emerges from your study, you’ll need to overhaul the kitchen to reduce steps and avoid looking for objects. Cooking utensils will be more available if they’re suspended by hooks on a rail or placed in a decorative pot. A spice rack, a bi-level lazy susan, a drawer or retractable spice organizer will allow you to quickly find that elusive spice bottle. A food cupboard, equipped with retractable shelves, quickly brings the cans and bottles within reach, as much for those placed entirely in the rear, as those located in the front. Do the kids help prepare the meals? Store the day-to-day tablecloths, napkins, dishes and cutlery in a separate corner cabinet. Thus, the kids will be able to easily set the table without getting in the way in the kitchen.
If your greatest preoccupation is to maximize your kitchen storage space, you’ll find a multitude of accessories on the market that will help you do exactly that. For cupboards, hooks to suspend cups will free up more space for glasses and dishes. Metal trellis pigeonholes that can be fastened under the shelves offer great storage possibilities for, for example, baby items (baby-bottle nipples, medicine droppers, etc) or some of the smaller plastic or metal lids. Pivoting shelves are useful for storing kitchen utensils and dishes in corner cupboards while keeping them easily accessible. Frying pans, cookie sheets, muffin and cake tins, dripping pans and cutting boards take up less space when stored in a vertical position, so for these items, install separators in a cupboard. Consider installing shelves in the cupboard beneath the sink. You’ll double the usable space. Finally, countertops can be the site of pretty, decorative containers for storing less-used items.
In the drawers, superimposed dividers can double the useful storage space. The top plateau slides away to give access to the utensils below. Separation bins in the drawers are useful for dividing other kitchen articles like measuring cups, cookie cutters, the can opener, the garlic press, the wine cork puller, the nut and lobster crackers, etc.
Many accessories can be hung inside cupboard or basement doors. This is the case for bag holders, paper towel dispensers and garbage containers. You’ll also find on the market various supports and baskets designed to be fixed to the backs of doors. Here’s the place to store cleaning products, rolls of paper towel, aluminium foil,
"Ziploc bags", etc.

Storage specialists design many kitchen products such as baskets and retractable, sliding supports, some for specific purposes, others for more general usage. Measure all your potential storage spaces before setting foot in a store. Once there, you may find some extremely ingenious solutions that will take care of your storage needs.
