Decorate your home for the holiday season
The tradition of decorating homes for the holiday season goes back to the second half of the nineteenth century. Around 1860, Montreal merchants were offering holly and mistletoe to their well-to-do customers so they could decorate their homes.
Nowadays, stores offer a huge variety of Christmas decorations. The trend is to decorate everywhere: the entrance hall, the kitchen, the dining room, the living room and even the bathroom. Your guests will be impressed!
The entrance hall is the perfect place to set the tone for the festivities.
Garlands are perfect for a casual and joyful atmosphere. Depending on the theme you’ve chosen, the garland can be made of evergreen branches, vine, flowers, pearls, or traditional straw. Add some Christmas lights and a few ornaments, then hang them on doorframes or wrap them around the railing. The finishing touch to your welcome: a doormat with holiday designs placed at the front door.
Why not use the coat rack or hooks normally used to hang outdoor clothing to put up a few decorations? Traditional Christmas stockings would be perfect. You could also hang large ball decorations using different coloured ribbons. Vary the length of the ribbons to create some movement and lend a little frivolity to this decor. Attractive ready-made cloth figurines can easily be hung, and they appeal to all ages This is a very simple way to add some fun to your vestibule.
If you’ve put up shelves for various objects in daily use, you could co-opt the space to set different sized boxes wrapped in pretty paper or some Christmas knick knacks.
For a more sophisticated or intimate style, light some candles and place them on a small table in the entrance hall. If you’re not too fond of candles, you could use the space for a pretty lamp. The lamp shade could be red or green, or decorated with Christmas motifs. There is a practical side to the welcoming atmosphere you’ve created: your guests can see properly when they enter the house! Then beside the candles, choose decorations that will complement your theme. For example, if you’ve chosen angels, you could place an animated angel or angel figurines on the table.
