A décor created to please the eye. Picture molding, pediment, O’gees and others that harmonize in this enchanting décor that creates a pleasantly warm atmosphere. Cinnamon and sunflower colors complement each other perfectly to embellish this cozy, intimate space.
This décor is easy to do, as all that’s needed is to follow a few helpful directions that will facilitate both cutting and installation.
Moldings used in this project are made of jointed pine, painted grade.
To calculate the length of molding required, measure the room perimeter and round off to the highest number of feet. Add 5% to account for losses. In general, molding is available in lengths of 8 or 16 feet.
During installation, to minimize material losses and assure a flawless job, it is important to always measure the length needed to cover each area where a molding is to be installed.
Installation suggestions
Moldings can be nailed with finishing nails or glued with carpenters glue. Nail leaving 1/16 inch sticking out and finish with a nail set.
You can join two moldings by cutting them at right angles. However, an oblique cut is preferable. Set both pieces so that they fit to the right length against the wall and then cut both at a 45º angle. If you must join two pieces, make sure that the color and grain match up. For all types of moldings, reduce the number of joints to a minimum.
1. Installing O’gees
To facilitate O’gee installation, you can use pre-cut corners: inside cut #25621, outside cut #25620.
To cut, flip the molding over (top down) in a miter box. The bottom of the crown should be pressed against the side of the box that will receive the saw. The molding forms an empty triangle with the side and the bottom of the miter box.
For inside corners: measure the two desired lengths. Place the outside part of the molding facing you. Cut the two adjacent pieces at a 45º angle. Using a combination square, if the measured angle is not 90º, the two adjacent pieces won’t measure out at 45º each.
For outside corners: measure the two desired lengths. Place back side out in the miter box and cut at the opposite angle marks.
2. Installing picture rail
Install picture rail at a height of 36 inches.
3. Installing casing
The number and size of casings you install is a question of personal taste and the style you wish to give to a room.
In this décor, the casings measure 23 inches high × 10 inches wide.
Place the molding flat at the bottom of the miter box and cut the piece. Precisely measure and lightly mark each piece to be cut.
When working with a number of colors, it is recommended to finish the moldings before installation and retouch after installation.
4. Installing pediment
The pediment is composed of a rectangle #81447, with added decorative moldings #81455, #81460, plus an arabesque #D165.
The pediment must go ½ inch beyond the sides of the frame.
5. Closing the edges
To close the edges, (depth of the rectangle) make an opposite cut with the decorative moldings. Use a door bottom base #85598.
6. Finishing
Nail holes must be filled with filler, sanded and painted with a base-coat before final painting. Apply a bead of sealer, which can be painted, on the top and bottom of the molding.
You’ll be proud of this rich and sober décor that will afford pleasure, year after year.
