The tray is to be made in two pieces: the oval-shaped base and the irregular-shaped top piece. Each piece will be dealt with separately and the two will be glued together at the end of the process.
To begin, draw out both pieces on paper and cut out with scissors. Then trace the PIECES on a wood panel or on 5/8" (1.5-cm) thick plywood panel. Cut out with a jig saw and carefully sand the edges.
2. Apply the sealer
Using a paintbrush, apply a coat of Laurentide Prime Time DUO Latex Primer Sealer on all surfaces of both pieces. Let dry for 4 hours.
3. Apply the paint and the tissue paper
Tray bottom: Using a paintbrush, apply a thick coat of Indian Woods (DB224-22) on the tray base and, before the paint dries, lay down the tissue paper over the paint. To avoid tearing the paper and make sure it adheres to the surface properly, gently rub it with the hand or a dry roller. Let dry for 4 hours. Apply a second coat of the same colour over the tissue paper. Let dry for 4 hours.
Tray frame: Using a paintbrush, apply a coat of Fall Breeze (A219-24) on the tray frame and, before the paint dries, lay down the tissue paper over the paint. To avoid tearing the paper and make sure it adheres to the surface properly, gently rub it with the hand or a dry roller. Let dry for 4 hours. Apply a second coat of the same colour over the tissue paper. Let dry for 4 hours.
4. Rub a coat of Pearlescent
Tray bottom: Using a paintbrush, rub a light coat of ARTIFICE Pearlescent Deep Gold on the tissue already painted in Indian Woods. Let dry for 1 hour.
Tray frame: Using a paintbrush, rub a light coat of Pearlescent Artifice Copper on the tissue already painted in Fall Breeze. Let dry for 1 hour.
5. Varnish
Using a paintbrush, apply BRÏO Varnish Velvet Finish. Let dry for 6 to 8 hours.
6. Join the pieces
Join the tray bottom and frame with wood glue.
7. Apply a coat of Laurentide blue
Once the pieces are solidly glued, use a paintbrush to paint the underside of the tray and the edge of the frame in Laurentide Blue (B-201-32). You will need to apply 2 coats, 4 hours apart. Once all the painting is complete, let dry for 4 hours.
8. Top coat
Using paintbrush, cover with BRÏO Varnish Velvet Finish.
Let dry from 6 to 8 hours.
9. Screw the legs
The small legs affixed to the tray are painted wood handles, screwed to the tray bottom.
