The contemporary bathroom is becoming even bigger. These days, its dimensions compare more to a child’s room, an area of 80 to 120 square feet. This additional space can easily contain a closed shower, a fitted, framed bathtub, as well as a large sink-cabinet area with two sinks and an abundance of storage space.

Its vocation is also in constant evolution. It’s now regarded as an oasis of calm, a refuge sheltering one from day to day concerns and the accelerated pace of modern life. It’s where we spend more and more time, where we pamper ourselves, where we relax and revitalize. So its no surprise that therapeutic, jet-spray tubs have become as popular as they are these days…

Because they play a larger role in are lives and the benefits they procure, many households that decide to renovate don’t hesitate to devote large sums to convert their bathrooms into luxurious, opulent havens. It’s also easier to justify the expense knowing that bathroom renovations are among those that add the most to a home’s resale value. According to a study conducted in the fall of 1999 by the Canadian Evaluators Institute, 68% of the costs of renovating a bathroom are recovered at the sale of a property.

Decorating trends

When it comes to bathroom decoration, it’s difficult to identify any one trend among all the many styles that are available. However, one fact is certain, homeowners must be sure that they’re comfortable with their chosen decoration style and that it corresponds with their overall perception of the house.

Styles

The Zen style, highly popular in interior design, is also present in bathroom design. We distinguish it by its sober and pure lines in the bathtub and the sink, its absence of furniture and its white and grey tones. Nature-inspired décor is another trend that we find in bathrooms. This style is composed of plants and natural materials such as slate, which has the effect of creating a calm and serene atmosphere.
