Colour trends: The 2010 RONA palette
After several years of spectacular, highly saturated shades, what will this year bring us in terms of interior colours? Economic uncertainty, environmental concerns, globalization and new technologies are but a few of the many worldwide social currents that are becoming increasingly complex. Our decorating themes subconsciously echo these trends. In reaction to our concerns, this year’s colour schemes are also more complex, somewhat muted, with each shade influencing the next. Here’s a look at the trends that will inspire us as we contemplate giving our homes a makeover in the coming months.
Given the economic instability spreading across the world, a greater need for calm, comfort and well-being has emerged, which is reflected in our choice of decor and, more particularly, colours. The emphasis is on soft, relaxing hues and subdued tones. Nevertheless, in trying to remain positive about the future, we continue to pair stylish, vibrant and decisively modern colours with neutral tones.
The eco trend remains strong and influences our interiors with nature-based colours, be they greens, blues or achromatic. Local and hand-made products continue to make major inroads in today’s decorating styles. To get an idea of the latest colour trends, take a look around you; raw, unfinished materials and hand-crafted products can provide remarkable sources of inspiration.
The blend of ongoing globalization and our zest for travel opens a world of possibilities. Some of the more spectacular trips we make have such an impact on us that we bring back mementoes – and ideas – for our homes. Popular destinations such as Asia, Russia and India are treasure troves for vibrant, flamboyant and exotic new hues. And those who don’t travel have just as much access to the latest decorating trends and styles thanks to HDTV and the Internet.
Timeless neutrals
Reflecting the desire for security and a need for permanence, especially in a constantly evolving and uncertain world, neutrals represent a safe haven and as such are a popular pick for interiors. This is hardly surprising, given that it’s so easy to give a room the trendiest of makeovers by adding bold accents in the form of cushions, window treatments or accessories in one of the year’s hottest hues.
The dominant shade in this palette by far, grey is clearly the new neutral. It’s the perfect colour in uncertain times, symbolizing both longevity and the present. It is fashionable, while at the same time displaying a measure of conformity. The desired effect depends entirely on how the colour is used. If you want a simple, monochromatic look, use only grey throughout the room. For a more modern touch, choose a metallic or pearl finish. To add a spark of life and energy, introduce bright accessories.
Brown is another shade that is all the rage this year. In 2009, we will be seeing lighter tones that remind us of warm and soothing spices like cinnamon and ginger. As always, we love mocha and caramel, as well as rich cognac hues.
In our ongoing desire to reconnect with our environment and the raw state of nature, we are attracted to colours inspired by earth, sand, stone and minerals, as well as natural fibres such as linen or cotton, either tone on tone or combined with more striking shades.
Green – a far-reaching trend
On the same theme of all things natural and organic, especially our desire to protect the environment, we continue to show a preference for a whole range of greens, reflecting our commitment to our planet. This year, though, the new greens are tinged with yellow, bringing them closer to earthy shades. Avocado green is still in, but we will also see chlorophyll green, both for walls and for floors, or as part of patterns in fabrics and various coverings.
A richer green is produced when a hint of blue is added, bringing to mind gemstones such as sapphire and aquamarine.
The yellows this year are strongly saturated, very sunny and urban, suggestive of New York taxis and traffic signs.
