Building a partition for an outdoor shower |
For an unequalled touch of luxury, install an outdoor shower. A small pleasure, to be enjoyed on warm days by everyone, including guests. The privacy of this outdoors shower is made possible with a 78 in. high partition made up of two panels (46 in. and 70 in.) They are made of real cedar, a rich and warm wood that contributes to the feel of luxury which emanates from this layout.
You can build this partition with standard wood, but it is preferable to use treated wood for better resistance to bad weather and, of course, to shower water. Use cedar parts if this material is available in your area.

1. Select and cut the parts
Set aside 4 posts of 4 × 4 × 126 in. Cut 2 pieces of 2 × 4 in. at 38 in. each and 2 others at 62 in. Cut 4 pieces of 2 × 3 × 9½ in. in length, 4 pieces at 38 in. and 4 others at 62 in. Cut 6 pieces of 1 × 2 of 10-½ in. in length. Cut about thirty pieces of 1 × 3 in. of 58 in. in length, 18 pieces of 17 in., 5 pieces of 30 in., 2 pieces of 10¾ and 2 pieces of 9½ in. |
2. Make the rails | |
Run all the pieces of 2 × 3 in. through a bench saw, so as to create a groove of 9/16 in. deep on the entire length. These grooves will be used as rails to slide the wooden X’s and the vertical pieces. Make a ¾ in. groove in two pieces of 2 × 3 × 38 in. and in two pieces of 2 × 3 × 62 in. Make 1 ½ in. wide grooves in the other pieces of 2 × 3 in. Use dado blades to do this. |
3. Build the lower part of the walls
3.1 | |
Insert one piece of 1 × 3 × 68 in. between two pieces of 2 × 3 × 38 in. in the ¾ in. rail so as to have the edge of the 58 in. piece, 1/8 in from the end of the 38 in. pieces. Screw the 58 in. piece to the 32 in. pieces. |
3.2 | |
Insert and screw 13 other pieces of 58 in. into the rails. Be careful to always place the pieces in a parallel manner and spaced about 1/8 from each other. |
3.3 | |
Centre and screw one piece of 2 × 4 × 38 in. on the top of one of the 2 × 3 rails of the previous assembly. Set aside for now. |
4. Build the upper part of the walls
4.1 | |
Insert a piece of 2 × 3 × 9½ in. between two pieces of 2 × 3 × 38 in. in the l ½ in. wide rail, by having the edge of the 9 ½ in. piece flush with the ends of the 38 in. pieces. |
4.2 | |
Centre and screw one piece of 2 × 4 × 38 in. on one of the 2 × 3 × 38 in. of the previous assembly. Screw from the inside of the rail. |
4.3 | |
Centre and screw the other piece of 2 3 × 38 in. of the assembly at line 4.2 to the 2 × 4 × 38 in. of the part which you have set aside at line 3.3. Screw from the inside of the rail. |
4.4 | |
From the bottom of the rail of the 9 ½ in. piece, measure 12 in. and make marks on the two pieces of 38 in. From these marks, measure again 12 in. You will then have two marks on each piece, indicating the centre of the vertical pieces, defining 3, 12 in. wide squares, in this way. |
4.5 | |
Measure the distance between two diagonal marks of a same square and cut one 1 × 3 in. piece which will be 1 in. longer than this distance (approx. 17 in.) |
4.6 | |
Cut the edges of this 1 × 3 × 17 in. piece so as to have the right angle. Insert in the rails and check to see that by inserting a vertical piece of 1 × 2 × 10 ½ in., this one can be centered on the marks made at line 4.4. Adjust if necessary, then cut 15 other boards of 17 in. in the same manner. |
4.7 | |
Slide a 2nd board into the rails so as to form an X with the first. |
4.8 | |
Slide a vertical board 1 × 2 × 10 ½ in. between the two horizontal rails, alternate with X’s and horizontal pieces. |
4.9 | |
Insert another 2 × 3 × 9 ½ in. piece between the 2, 38 in. pieces and screw. This will close the frame and hold all the inserted pieces in place and will need no other anchoring method. |
4.10 | |
Repeat the same steps to assemble the other wall; the only difference being the height. |
5.1 | |
Form the top of the bench, with 4 pieces of 1 × 3 × 30 in. (spaced at ¼ in.) placed on two pieces of 1 × 3 × 10¾ in. |
5.2 | |
Screw the 5th piece of 1 × 3 × 30 in. horizontally on the longest wall, at approximately 22 in. from the ground (or desired height). |
5.3 | |
Screw the two pieces of 1 × 3 × 9 ½ in. vertically on the wall, under the ends of the horizontal piece, installed previously. |
5.4 | |
Place the bench on the horizontal piece anchored to the wall and cut the edges of the 2 pieces of 1 × 3 × 17 in. so as to get the proper angles to let them rest under the bench and as well on the wall. Screw these pieces to the 9 ½ in. and the 10 ¾ in. pieces and, as well, screw the bench to the horizontal piece. |
6. Proceed to the final assembly
6.1 | |
Put two 4 × 4 × 126 in. posts into the ground, at 38 in. from each other (edge to edge) and at 48 in. in depth. Put the other two posts at 62 in. from each other, so as to form a right angle with the other two posts. Make sure everything is vertical. |
6.2 | |
Screw the 2 panels to the posts, so as to have the top flush with the top of the posts. There should be a space of 2 ½ in. between the bottom of the panels and the ground. Instead of screws, you can use joist hangers. |
