Building process

This half wall is built in the same way as a standard wall, i.e., by building a wooden structure covered with drywall panels.

The structure is constituted by 2 × 6 in. parts (actually measuring 1 ½ × 5 ½ in.), which saves building time and strengthens the shelves.

In addition, this choice enables you to easily adapt this project to your needs and space: you can vary the half wall's length and height and, particularly, its thickness.

Indeed, to build this half wall, two half walls 6 in. thick are actually built, and juxtaposed to obtain a half wall 12 in. thick, once it is covered with drywall. If you build a single-layer half-wall, it will be 6 ½ in. thick, whereas three juxtaposed half walls will produce a final thickness of 17 ½ in. It's your choice, depending on the available space and the desired effect!

1. Preparing the wood parts

The number of different 2 × 6 in. parts necessary to build the structure is quite small:
    2 parts of 32 ½ in. (E)
    4 parts of 71 ½ in. (A)
    8 parts of 2 in. (C)
    8 parts of 13 in. (D)
    12 parts of 44 in. (B)

Cut your parts with a circular saw or a sliding mitre saw. In case you don't have the necessary tools, certain renovation centres offer a cutting service.

Refer to the cutting plan opposite to optimize each board. (click picture to enlarge)
