The bathroom: an important part of the home

Bathrooms, like kitchens, are among the most important rooms in the house. They are used frequently. People like to linger in a nice whirlpool tub or enjoy the benefits of a therapeutic bath. If space is at a premium, a deep bathtub on legs represents a good and relaxing compromise.

Here are some tips that will help you successfully design your bathroom.

The bath and shower

When buying a bath or whirlpool make sure you sit in it to evaluate it.

For small bathrooms that cannot be made larger, replace the steel bathtub with a deeper, more comfortable acrylic model. Wall hung vanities and pedestal lavatories also create an illusion of space. Wall-to-wall mirrors can make your bathroom look a lot bigger.

Showers are increasingly large. New moulded models use relatively little space but yield a lot, thanks to their curved design.

If you choose a ceramic tile shower, you can design it to suit your wishes and give it the shape and size you want. You could even build-in a bench that will allow the lady of the house to shave her legs comfortably.

The water closet

To the extent possible, the water closet should be hidden, something that is not easy to do in a room that is generally small. Choose a model that is discreet, equipped with a low or narrow tank, and try to place more emphasis on the lavatory so as to shift the focus of attention. This example shows a pedestal lavatory with a smaller water closet.

The lavatory and counter

Wash basins are usually available in porcelain, Corian and, more and more, in stainless steel.

Counter tops are made of granite and Corian™ although laminates are still favoured by those who are durability and price-conscious. Counters can be made more interesting with the addition of rounded shapes.

Faucets

The latest in bathroom decorating is the faucet, more particularly its colour. Brushed steel and brass are very popular. Umbrella-style showerheads tend to be larger and are available in chrome-brass and porcelain models.

The final touch

To give your shower a personal and welcoming touch, take out your bath salt bottles and display them on attractive shelves or on the vanity.
