Applying stucco

Stucco is a mixture of cement, sand and lime, applied over a thick metal mesh. Pigments are available in a wide range of colours, so stucco can be tinted to match all other types of cladding. It is also extremely malleable, allowing you to create a specific texture or pattern in order to achieve the desired look for your home.

Important notes

Store the product in a cool and dry place. Do not place directly on the floor. Do not use a product that was damaged by water, humidity or has hard lumps in it.

A 22.7 kg. bag will cover approximately 40 square feet (1/8 in. thick).

Stucco is applied on a metallic trellis installed on the wall prior to the stucco application. You can also install stucco over any surface with a cement base.

The ambient temperature of the surfaces and of the product should run between 5 Celsius and 35 Celsius during application and for an additional 72 hours following the work. The product is usable for more or less two hours. Do not add water to make it more flexible.

It is possible to colour the stucco with a compatible product.

1. Prepare the surface

1.1

Clean the surface to be covered. This surface must be solid, clean and rid of any particles that could hamper the stucco adhesion such as grease, dust, oil, paint or other.

1.2

Moisten the surface to be covered thoroughly 12 to 24 hours before the beginning of the work.

1.3

Dampen the surface (without creating any accumulation) before applying stucco.

2. Prepare the mix

2.1

Pour 4 to 4.5 litres of water per bag of 22.7 kg. into a clean container.

2.2

GRADUALLY add dry ingredients of the bag by mixing with a drill equipped with an agitator of the same type as the paint mixers.

2.3

Mix for about three minutes while scraping the sides of the container and making sure you obtain a homogeneous result. If the mix is too thick, gradually add a bit of water, being careful not to make it too thin.

3. Apply

3.1

Stucco needs two coats. The two coats combined must total a minimal thickness of ¾ in. Apply the first coat with a steel trowel. Tamp well.

3.2

Then go over with a notched trowel so as to obtain a rough surface, which increases adhesion for the second coat. Wait until the first coat is dry, approximately 24 hours.

3.3

Dampen the first coat. Apply the second coat with a finishing trowel, a brush, a paint brush or a sponge depending on the expected finish.

IMPORTANT: Once the stucco is dry, dampen the surface often, over three days, following the application.
Using the right equipment, your determination and a bit of elbow grease, the successful completion of this project is just a few steps away!
