Nothing is more relaxing than the sound of bubbling water surrounded by blooming flora of every species and the wildlife attracted by such plant life. Incorporate a water garden into your landscape design for the ultimate backyard sanctuary.
Installation of a waterproof liner water garden is easy. In one weekend, your water garden will be installed and functioning ready for you to enjoy planting and cultivating the vast assortment of aquatic plants available. Add a variety of fish to your pond, and soon you will be enjoying your landscape on an entirely new level with the aquatic sanctuary that you have created.
1.1 Determine the best view for your pond.
1.2 Determine the shape desired for your water garden.
1.3 Mark the outline of the water garden on the ground with wooden stakes or a garden hose.
2.1 Determine the depth and shelf heights you desire for your pond and dig accordingly.
2.2 Try to make surfaces level or slightly sloped. Avoid rugged “cliffs”.
2.3 Once you have your desired shape and depth, pack down loose dirt by walking on it.
3.1 An underlayment protects the waterproof liner from sharp objects (roots, rocks, etc) that could potentially puncture the liner. The underlayment is installed beneath the waterproof liner.
3.2 There are commercial underlayments available on the market for this purpose. Sand, newspaper or old carpet could also be used as an underlayment. It is recommended that the underlayment be at least 1/2" thick.
3.3 Place the underlayment across the entire surface area that will be covered by your flexible liner.
4.1 Cover the hole with the liner, pushing it to the bottom of the pond by stepping on it. Push the liner into any shelf corners or other surfaces, smoothing the waterproof liner along the ground of the pond.
4.2 When the entire hole is covered, allow the liner to come up and fold over the edge of the yard. Allow a generous portion to lie on the ground around your pond.
4.3 Pleat the edges of the liner along the walls of the pond, allowing the liner to fold over the ledge of the ground. Secure the liner edges with large fieldstones, pavers, bricks or other weights.
5.1 Begin filling the pond with water.
5.2 When there are several inches of water in the bottom of the pond, examine the tension of the liner. If the liner is stretching, remove the stones around the edge, allowing the liner to move into a relaxed position. Reposition the stones.
5.3 Continue filling the pond in this manner, adjusting liner and stones as necessary.
6.1 It is recommended that you leave several inches of excess liner beyond the ring of stones or pavers. You may disguise the excess liner by covering with dirt, additional rocks, plants or mulch.
6.2 Store extra trimmings for patching in the event of a puncture in the liner.
Installation of pump will largely depend on the type purchased. Make sure there is a GFCI outlet nearby to connect the pump. If not, there are other alternatives such as solar pump that can be used.
Submersible pumps work well for most water gardens. To install a submersible water pump:
7.1 Place the pump on top of a brick or cinder block at the deepest point in your pond. Do not allow the pump to sit on the bottom of the pond or sediment will be sucked into the pump, causing problems.
7.2 Attach the water outlet tubing by putting a hose clamp over the tubing four inches from the end, then attaching the tubing to the water discharge stem of the pump. Position the clamp so that it is 1/2" from the end of the hose. Secure it in place. (NOTE: The hose clamps only need to be used if the hose-to-stem fit is not sufficiently tight.)
7.3 Position the tubing so that it pushes the water out where you desire it. Consider placing it attached to a fountain head, statue mouth, urn or other element. Secure the tubing with landscaping rocks or fasteners.
7.4 Plug the pump into a GFCI electrical outlet, ensuring that its location is safe from water and foot traffic.
7.5 Turn the pump on, verifying that it is working correctly. Correct any leaks found at the tubing connections.
