If you want your closet to meet your needs and be perfectly organized, keep three criteria in mind – visibility, accessibility and organization. To make your daily life simpler, everything should be seen at a glance and easy to reach.
Many practical and functional accessories are available to help you maximize your space. They reinvent storage by classifying, compartmentalizing or sorting all your clothes and things to simply get them at the right place.
It’s time to begin. First, think of your daily routine, and of the clothes and accessories you use more often. Then you’ll know what to keep on hand. Dedicate shelves and drawers to your folded clothes, but don’t forget the ones you hang – install higher rods for your dresses and coats, and lower rods for your shirts, pants and skirts.
Also remember to keep a good balance between open space storage and enclosed storage. Shelving and rods will allow you to see everything, while clothes cabinet, drawers, decorative boxes and storage totes will wonderfully hide your secrets and less interesting items!
The top of a closet, which is often a little hard to reach, is ideal to stow away off-season items. Use clear plastic totes to keep them visible, or label each container to easily identify contents.
So often forgotten in the back of a drawer, accessories also need to be kept within reach. Bags and hats can be put on shelves or in baskets, belts and ties can be rolled in a drawer or hung on hooks, and scarves can be sorted by colour in a storage cart.
Boots and shoes should be placed on a floor shoe rack. You could also install on an over-the-door shoe holder or shoe shelves to keep the floor clear.
Use every corner you have and install robe hooks to hang items that are frequently used – your pajama, your bathrobe, your handbag or, even better, the clothes you’ll wear tomorrow! Hooks are ideal to keep visible some useful accessories, such as scarves or hats.
A full-lenght mirror is a must! Inside your closet, it will create the illusion of space and make the most of your storage area, while allowing you to get a last look at yourself before leaving home. If space is limited, be sure to fix a mirror on the back of a door, it will be very useful. Moreover, some mirrors also serve as jewelry cabinets!
You’re ready for the final touches! A laundry hamper, uniform hangers, a bench to help put on your favourite shoes and a candle holder turned into a perfect coin tray – your new smart closet will make everyone jealous!
