The Sustainable Packaging Policy applies to RONA’s entire packaging system (primary, secondary and tertiary) and all types of packaging materials throughout their life cycle.

Primary packaging is packaging intended for the consumer or end user. Secondary packaging is used to group several primary packages to facilitate distribution, while tertiary packaging is used to protect and transport packaged products from the distributor or manufacturer to the retailer.

The Policy encompasses all activities of the packaging value chain and defines the areas in which we actively seek to encourage transformation, innovation, reduction and optimization. The Policy applies to both our private brands packaging and packaging sourced through our suppliers for our other products.

The Sustainable Packaging Policy is closely related to our Responsible Procurement Policy (RPP) and our Paper Products Use and Procurement Policy, as specifically stated in the document.

RONA’s Responsible Procurement Policy encompasses all the company’s specific procurement policies. It gives the global guidelines for the procurement of all products and services sold in our stores, as well as goods and services used by the company.

This document presents RONA’s Paper Products Use and Procurement Policy. It applies to the paper products used in our activities and operations, as well as those sold in our network of stores and those used by suppliers to produce printed matter for RONA. This policy is the second part of the Forest Products Procurement Policy. The first part is dedicated to the Wood Products Procurement and was launched in November 2008.

This policy does not apply to the packaging of products sold in our network. Packaging is subject to a separate policy.

This policy applies to all products and services offered in the RONA stores, as well as goods and services used by the company, and shall be observed by all its consultants and suppliers, and also by their subcontractors. Through this policy, RONA’s objective is to mobilize its partners.

Our efforts and resources will be allocated to those products, services and sources of supply which present the most substantial potential impact in social and environmental terms, with due regard for the changing state of knowledge on these matters.

This Wood Products Procurement Policy is the first phase of RONA’s Forest Products Procurement Policy and applies to wood products that are sold in all our stores. The second phase of the Company’s Forest Products Procurement Policy consists of the Paper Procurement Policy.

The Policy
RONA is committed to conducting business with suppliers who have a proven record of environmental awareness; are progressive in their environmental and sustainable forest management practices; can demonstrate that fibre used is sourced from legal and sustainable forests; do not contribute to deforestation; are committed to continual improvement and proactively address issues related to their activities. RONA values suppliers who integrate the Life Cycle Assessment approach to develop and make products.

The scope of the policy

This policy applies to plastic shopping bags used at checkouts in RONA network stores across Canada and includes all company banners.

THE POLICY
RONA intends to reduce the use of plastic shopping bags in its network of stores and to encourage customers to adopt responsible alternatives. This policy aims to decrease the number of plastic bags sent to landfill sites to diminish the environmental footprint from plastic shopping bags as well as easing pressure on non-renewable resources.

This policy applies to synthetic pesticides used for cosmetic purposes that are sold in stores belonging to the RONA network across Canada. This policy applies to all banners part of the RONA network.

The policy
RONA has stopped selling synthetic pesticides for cosmetic use in all its stores across Canada since July 1, 2009. The list of products that have be withdrawn is annexed to this document. In order to meet the needs of its clientele, RONA aims at continuing the introduction of ecologically responsible alternatives in all its stores.

RONA’s approach is therefore based on the following key components: informing and training our employees as well as informing, sensitizing and inciting consumers to adopt alternative solutions to synthetic pesticides for cosmetic use.
