Even though resistance and functionality are paramount in the qualities of a counter, it remains the ultimate decor element in the kitchen. With a judicious combination of materials, styles, and colours, the counter alone can give the whole room a professional allure.
There is a subtle play on contrasts in this kitchen, with its very harmonious colour combinations. Stainless steel takes on a warmer character when combined with wood, and blends in perfectly with kitchen appliances. All the elements of the kitchen here contribute to making the working surface functional: varying heights to accommodate everyone’s different activities, integrated sink, and large surface area. Finally, large ceramic tiles – the same as those used for the floor – enhance the style and offer a natural touch to this very up-to-date kitchen.
Completely natural
This very elegantly simple, black laminated counter is wonderfully enhanced by the irregular lines of the natural stone backsplash. Due to the depth it affords, we were able to install shelving for the fine glassware. Here you find a careful mix of genres, where wood, laminates, and glass combine to form a real treat for your eyes – both inviting and uniquely different.
The charm is in the white
"Freshness" is the word that springs to mind when first entering this rustically inspired kitchen. We wanted the backsplash to be the major attraction here, with its white brick and touches of beige, so the counter was kept fairly neutral. The wood surface of the centre island and the every-day objects carefully placed on the counter are reminders of the charms of kitchens past, while affording the practicality of today’s materials.
Brightness and transparency
The deep black of this long, glossy, granite counter is in stark contrast to the light-coloured backsplash. A rod with hooks installed over the whole length of the backsplash puts ladles, spatulas, strainers, and graters within easy reach of the cook – and puts an accent on practical living in the kitchen. Behind the stove and at a few inches above the length of the counter, Plexiglas squares reflect daylight and add a modern touch to the kitchen. They also serve as a protective layer for the walls, making cleaning much easier. Ingenious, and… luminous!
Definitely modern
Wood and metal, what a terrific blend! The backsplash has been covered with a sheet of textured aluminum, looks very modern, and seems to "enlarge" the room by reflecting the surrounding light. The brightness of the kitchen area is further enhanced by the cabinet panels – of transparent glass and simply fashioned wood – standing out clearly from the robust style of the metal surfaces. This certainly an arrangement that doesn’t lack for character!
Trendy classics
Whoever said that marble was "cold"? In conjunction with wooden cabinets, marble gains in warmth and can bestow a great deal of elegance and prestige, as it does in this kitchen. The centre island is at a different height, and is perfect both as a lunch counter and as an open work surface – for those who do not want to be separated from whatever else is going on in the room. Behind the very generous working area of the counter, the ceramic backsplash, with its subtle diamond-shaped inserts, completes this very welcoming though simple decor. Wood, marble, and ceramic – materials that have stood the test of time and that provide a sound basis for a successful decor.
A “top of the line” kitchen
Here, elegance is the result of the right proportions of wood, granite, and stainless steel. The simple, glossy granite has been cut to straight, simple lines. Exquisitely modern, the backsplash is covered with stainless steel and accentuates the very prestigious quality of the room. These are new combinations of enduring classics.
Wood, glass, stainless steel, granite: there are many different materials to choose from for a truly incomparable counter. Go for it! And dare to try unusual blends of colours and textures. Let the backsplash reflect your own personal style – a truly personal touch in a decor you live with every day.
