Pool Maintenance

Proper pool maintenance can take anywhere from several minutes to several hours per week, depending on the equipment at your disposal. One thing is clear, if you intend to take full advantage of the all too short swimming season, it is an important task that must not be neglected!

The following instructions were standardized for outdoor chlorine-based pools and may not be applicable or even recommended for bromine or salt-based pools. Also, the equipment at your disposal may differ from which is listed in this guide.

Daily Maintenance

To maintain consistent water quality, it is important that you observe a consistent maintenance schedule as well. As such, you should establish a daily routine (after your evening meal if possible, as this will help extend the chlorine lifecycle, whose chemical properties are destroyed by the sun’s rays):
  • Test the water using the reacting agents found in your water test kit or, better yet, using test-strips that simultaneously test chlorine, pH and alkalinity levels (test-strips are great time-savers).
  • Add the required quantities of products, as recommended by the manufacturer, to re-establish or maintain proper levels (see below).
  • Remove any debris using a leaf skimmer.
  • Replace the solar blanket in order to limit heat loss during the overnight hours.
  • Remove the solar blanket the following morning and retest the chlorine level; a chlorine level of at least 2 will suffice for the entire day. If the level is low, add a small quantity of chlorine.

If weather conditions are poor, leave the solar blanket in place; this will prevent the accumulation of debris and help maintain water temperature. Keep in mind that it is not recommended to leave the solar blanket in place for more than three days as this tends to promote algae development.
Recommended Level of Products:
  • Chlorine: 1.5 to 2 PPM
  • pH: 7.2 to 7.8 (add pH– to lower pH levels, and pH+ to increase)
  • Alkalinity: 80 to 120 PPM
  • Hardness: 200 to 400 PPM
