Planning a jungle gym

First and foremost, carefully go over the deed for your property which details its official boundaries. If the information is not complete, hire a surveyor.

Be sure to respect building codes and municipal bylaws. Some municipalities have passed very strict by-laws governing dimensions, soil coverage and materials allowed in the building of kids' centres. Permits are often required.

Location

The orientation is also important. In oder to prevent sunburns, plan and position your playground in relation to the sun's trajectory (during the summer) and take into account the location of trees, buildings, etc. Sun rays can be harmful. You may be able to avoid prevailing winds by locating your playground where the house will provide some protection. Be careful not to place it under a wire where birds usually perch, a gum-dripping spruce tree or under a nut-bearing tree to avoid the rodents that they attract, etc.

Practical tips

  • Treated wood boards should always be laid bark side up. Any landing or platform, whether treated or not, should also be installed in this manner in order to minimize separating of the wood layers.

  • When nailing the ends of boards, first drill small holes to prevent splitting.

  • Pressure treatment of wood eliminates the proliferation of termites and muld. Nevertheless, apply two coats of preservative to cuts and other incisions. A waterproof coating reduces splitting and adds protection against weather hazards.
After a proper planning, the construction can be realized smoothly; then you can enjoy looking at your children having fun in the new jungle gym.
