When it comes to decorating a room, nothing beats mouldings and trim to add style and depth to a decor. Mouldings not only enhance walls but can also be used to create spectacular effects on ceilings. All this is excellent news as current trends definitely point towards adding texture and profile. Clever combinations of different mouldings open a whole range of possibilities, the effects can be absolutely stunning. If you are looking for inspiration, our decors below will be sure to give you some great ideas.
A judicious arrangement of beams and mouldings will take a ceiling up into a whole new class. For this fabulous decor, we built a ceiling coffer around the perimeter of the ceiling, which was then criss-crossed with four beams. For a stylized finish and to highlight the classical feel of the room, we added detail to the inside of the coffers with panels and quarter-round mouldings. The imposing crown moulding added at the intersection of the walls and the ceiling adds great character to this fabulous decorative feature.
A touch of white
The simple mouldings used in this country-style dining room give a touch of class. A plain ogee running right around the room softens the angle where walls and ceiling meet. The freshness of the white trim brings out the rich colour of the walls and gives the room a crisp feel. The doors, topped by a transom window, are shown off with profiled cornices that blend with the door trim and window frames. They are dressed with sheers, and decorative curtain panels at the sides. The different trims enhance this beautiful decor, creating a perfectly coordinated ensemble.
Regal entrance
Impressive columns require generous mouldings to make them look their best. This is the ideal occasion to stack mouldings of different widths and profiles. To frame this wide entrance arch and accentuate the magnificence of the architecture, mouldings were assembled on wood panels integrating corner angles on the upper edges. To complete the classically inspired decor, we added elegant coving at the intersection of ceiling and walls, above which we ran a second, narrower decorative moulding. Simply sensational!
Back to the past
Here, wainscoting and mouldings complement the rich tones of wood and the wallpaper with delicate motifs, creating an architectural style reminiscent of period homes. The hall has been given character by panelling the lower third of the walls with wainscotting and adding a wide baseboard and a chair rail for an elegant finishing touch. A generous cornice, made from small pieces of wood combined with ogee moulding, tops each of the doors, adding to the yesteryear style. The decor would not be complete without the magnificent coving at the intersection of the walls and ceiling. All the trims and mouldings have been painted in a gentle white, which brings a crisp note of brightness to the hallway.
Victorian style
If you want to achieve a successful Victorian look, then trims are the way to go. For this hallway, we made use of a wide array of mouldings, panels and rails to create a luxurious feel. The wall running down the stairs was fitted with embossed panels topped with a rail, and the whole was painted white to contrast with the tones of the wall. Coffers, constructed using narrow moulding, decorate the upper part of the walls. Notice how the bottom edge of the coffers follows the rise of the stairs and how the use of two different tones for the paintwork bring out the detail in the woodwork and draw the eye to the inside of the coffers, which are lined with pretty wallpaper. The large French doors are enhanced with a broad casing and, to complete this elegant setting, the ceiling has been finished by stacking decorative mouldings of differing widths.
High profiles
In this room, which has a distinct classical feel, we chose to create points of interest around the windows. From ceiling to floor, each window has received special attention from a well thought out arrangement of mouldings. Each window is cased by a textured column. Below the window frame we fitted a board decorated with mouldings, and above the window elegant headers were constructed from MDF panels painted white. To crown it all, we fitted a decorative moulding with a sculpted motif. As a final finish for this sumptuous decor, we added wide crown moulding all around the room at the intersection of walls and ceiling. A chic, harmonious decor for a smart, bright room.
Trims and mouldings are extremely versatile elements of any decor, and are available in a wide variety of profile, textures, widths and sizes.
