Mitre saws are designed to cut perfect angles. To determine the tool that corresponds to your specific needs or inquire about the different models available on the market, please read the following guide.
The mitre saw can be used to cut wood, copper, aluminium and even PVC pipes at an angle (or bevelled according to the model). However, you must select the right blade that’s designed for the material, the finish and the type of job. Thus, according to the blade selected, you’ll be performing rough or finishing cuts, or grooves (chamfers).
The mitre box
A mitre box is a small wood or plastic accessory that contains thin grooves to cut right (90º) or 45º angles. Designed for small pieces of wood, it’s ideal for plinths, frames and mouldings. Some models have a honeycombed bottom to receive locking pins. Inexpensive, this box is ideal for people who only rarely do renovations or who dislike using power tools.
The mitre board
On the market, there exists mitre boards measuring 23-5/8 inches x 15-5/8 inches, adaptable to all circular saws and routers. Robust, they support 45-degree angle cuts in materials measuring 1-5/8 inches depth by 8 inches width, or right angle cuts (90 degrees) in materials up to 18 inches width.
Electric mitre saw models
The standard mitre saw
The standard mitre saw makes straight or angled cuts up to 45º (or more with some models), on the right side and, on some models, the left side. The cutting table size varies according to the model. Its 13 amperes power rating produces a blade speed of 5200 RPM.
The combined mitre saw
The combined mitre saw provides better performance than the previous model. As well as straight and 60º right side and 50º left side angles, it also makes from 0 to 45 degree bevel cuts. The cutting table size varies according to the model. Its power rating varies between 13 and 15 amperes. Since more power is required to cut through maple than pine, be aware of your requirements before choosing a particular model.
The radial mitre saw
The radial mitre saw offers the same cuts as a combined mitre saw: right, angled and bevelled (note that some models in this category produce 0 to 45 degree right/left bevelled cuts). What sets it apart from the combined mitre saw is its extendable arm that can cut to depths of 0 to 12 inches. This saw is designed for craftsmen and contractors. It has a power rating varying from 12 to 15 amperes and is driven by a belt instead of the direct drive as on certain models.
