Because we attach more importance to the preparation of meals, to our quality of life and to hosting friends, kitchens are becoming the centres of our homes. Hence we are becoming more demanding when it comes to their design and efficiency.
In the new millennium, kitchen-decorating trends emphasize comfort, warmth, style, practicality and the owner's own style.
Two styles - European and Texan - combine to define current decorating trends.
European style
Influenced by the laboratory-style kitchen, the European trend relies on simple materials and lines. Furniture matches cupboards, decorative shelving is used to store often-used appliances, and glass doors and stainless steel are all the rage. Generally, decorating is simple and efficiency-oriented.
Texan style
The Texan style exudes comfort and warmth. Robust materials give it a look of durability. Matte woods, slate, marble and travertine are among the preferred materials, with walls in textured plaster or patina. Architectural features take on more importance. Thus, ceilings are of different heights while arches and chimneys are often angled. Ranges and extraction hoods take on the look of wood-fired ovens. The more adventurous cover both walls and floors in mosaic tiles.
