Lay out a water garden

Building a water garden is a great way to bring new life to your back yard. As you work on it you will quickly realize that it becomes an important focal point in your overall landscape picture.

To get the most out of your water garden, set your pool where you get 5 or 6 hours of sun a day. Your plants will do better.

When designing a water garden, choose the type of pond that best suits your needs. A moulded fibreglass is economical, and quick and easy to install. On the other hand, a pond with a liner leaves more room for creativity and is more adaptable when it comes to planting.

Molded Pond

Step by step (Molded Pond)

  1. Choose the appropriate location for your pond and mark the circumference with wooden pegs.

  2. Dig a hole the same shape as your pond, but slightly larger, ensuring that the lip of the pond is a few inches higher than the grass level to prevent groundwater from draining into your pond.
  1. Place the pond in the hole and level it using a carpenter's level. Make sure that the ground beneath has been well compacted and that the bottom of the pond lays flat on the whole surface.

  2. Fill a third of your pond with water and start filing the outside edges with sand. Add a little water to the sand to help compact it.
  1. Continue filing while adding sand around around the circumference

  2. Install the pump, the filter and the bell-type nozzle. The pump should be located as far from the waterfall as possible for better circulation and the pump should never sit in the lowest area of the pond. If the waterfall return line was moved (animal digging children playing) it is possible for the intire pond to be drained.

  3. Decorate the pond and the circumference
  4. Choose your different quantities of aquatic plants to ensure proper biological equilibrium in your pool. (See Aquatic Plants)
