Types of lawn mowers

The four types of mowers are: manual, rechargeable, electric and gas. Your own lawn area will have an important influence on your choice, while you keep in mind various environmental, budgetary and personal criteria.

The manual mower

The manual mower is the quietest and most environmentally friendly choice. It is mainly recommended for small lawns (2000 square feet or less). Its very affordable price varies between $99 and $199, depending on such factors as the quality of its components, height adjustments, the distance settings between the rear and forward cutting blades relative to grass thickness, etc. A manual mower produces better results and demands less exertion when the grass is mowed regularly.

The rechargeable mower

The rechargeable mower is silent and presents no risk of electric shock or toxic fumes. It is designed for areas of 5000 square feet or less, as its electrical charge is limited. Its price, between $500 and $600, and maintenance, mainly batteries, are high, which explains its lack of popularity.

The electric mower

The electric mower is designed for areas of 5000 square feet or less, due to its electric wire connection. Light and easy to handle, it produces no toxic fumes. Maintenance is limited to cleaning the housing. The price of an electric mower will vary between $140 and $400. You can choose between regular cutting or mulching blades. Also, certain models are quieter than gas mowers.

The gas mower

The gas mower is the most popular model. It offers superior power on all types of terrain, large or small, flat or inclined, etc. However, it also demands more maintenance: an annual tune-up, regular changes of oil, spark plugs, gas and air filters. Prices start at $150, but to get a better price/quality ratio, it is advisable to go towards mowers in the $300 to $400 range. Gas mowers are available in the following versions: two or four stroke (the latter produces less pollution), push or self-propelled, with or without electric start and most come with a mulching blade.
