Use

The jigsaw is a multi-functional tool that allows you to perform various cuts: straight, curved, window, bias, etc. As well, a jigsaw can cut through a large array of materials, as long as it’s equipped with a blade adapted to the material: wood, metal, PVC, plastic, laminates, aluminium, fibreglass, ceramics, steel, etc.

Generalities

A jigsaw is powered by a fairly low performance electric motor, 3.2 to 6 amperes, that creates an up and down motion. The tool’s speed is calculated in blade strokes per minute. The maximum blade speed for saws sold on the market is 3250 strokes/minute. For harder materials like steel or for precision cutting, a slower speed is preferable.

The blade stroke height varies according to the tool’s power rating and the type of material being cut. Thus, while a jigsaw that can cut a 65mm thickness of wood, it can’t cut through more than 4 or 5mm of steel, but it can easily go through a 25mm pipe.

Characteristics

Jigsaw models present various characteristics such as variable speed, an adjustable shoe, an orbital motion, a pivoting head, a blade replacement system, a dust recovery system, a blade guard and a blade guide. The tool’s comfort factor should also be considered.

Variable speed

Speed can vary according to the model. Some models offer two preset speeds, others variable speed. Opt for the variable speed model, as this will diversify the saw’s uses. Thus, you’ll be able to maintain better control over the saw and choose the speed that best suits the material you’re working with.

The adjustable shoe

It’s possible to make 450 bevels with a jigsaw if it’s equipped with an adjustable shoe. Depending on the model, the release to adjust the shoe (also called plate or base) is manually controlled, needing an Allen key or a screwdriver.

The orbital motion

A jigsaw’s orbital motion gives the blade a second dimension, front and back. This system increases efficiency and sawing speed by reducing friction. It also reduces blade wear and material heating. On the downside, it also increases vibration. Thus, it should not be used for extremely precise cuts or on fragile material like ceramics.

Most models possessing this characteristic are equipped with an orbital movement adjustment and a switch to turn it on and off.

The pivoting head

Some saws come equipped with a button that allows the blade to move laterally when cutting tight curves and gives it characteristics similar to those of a scrolling saw.

The blade replacement system

There are numerous jigsaw blade replacement systems. While most jigsaws are equipped with a universal system, some can only use special blades. Others have a lever replacement mechanism for rapid blade changes. Finally, there’s always the conventional system that consists of unscrewing a screw to replace the blade.

The dust collector

It consists of a connector that can be attached to a vacuum cleaner. This characteristic keeps your work environment clean, sucking up sawdust as it goes.

The blade guard

Some saws are equipped with a blade guard. This plastic piece lowers down in front of the blade and serves a dual purpose: it prevents contact with the blade on one hand while, on the other, facilitates the collection of sawdust when the saw is connected to a vacuum.

The blade guide

The blade guide keeps the blade in position, preventing it from veering off line, to perform more precise cuts. This option, which is only found on a few models, reduces the risk of blade breakage.

The comfort factor

The shape and position of the handle and switch have an influence on the comfort level that you’ll experience when using the saw. The more comfortable the grip, the better the control you’ll have over the tool. When in the store, don’t hesitate to pick up various saws to test their comfort.

A lock-off button, figuring on certain models, allows the user to saw without maintaining constant pressure on the main switch.
