Advice

Your first step is to draw a plan of your house before buying the different gutter components. Determine the total length needed as well as the number and length of downspouts and fittings. If your house is already equipped with a gutter, you may use the dimensions of the existing system.

To help you out, download our Planning Guide available in PDF format.

1. Determine the location of the gutter

If your gutter is longer than 10 m (35 ft), it is recommended that the highest point be at the centre with the gutter sloping down towards the two ends.

Use a chalk line and mark the layout of the gutter

A slope of 3 to 5 mm (1/8 in) per meter of gutter is recommended for efficient drainage. As well, one drop outlet should not be used to drain more than 12 m (40 ft) of the gutter.

Mark the highest and lowest points of the gutter with a pencil. Drive a nail into the spot where the end of the gutter will go. Then, snap a chalk line to mark the slope of the new gutter.

2. Install the mounting brackets or « hooks »

There are numerous types of mounting brackets on the market. Our experts can help you choose the one which best meets the particular needs of your house.

2.1

Attach the highest mounting bracket using galvanised nails, being sure to follow the chalk line.

2.2

Next, following the chalk line, nail or secrew on the lowest mounting bracket.

2.3

Install the remaining mounting brackets, located between the two ends, again following the chalk line.

Note : For the gutter to be properly supported, the distance between each support should not exceed 50 cm (24 in). In regions exposed to extreme frost and snowfall, the distance should be 45 cm (18 in).
