It is now easier than ever for do-it-yourselfers to assemble their own kitchen cabinets thanks to the ready-made kitchen cabinet kits available on the market. Although this project may require several hours of work, it is nonetheless relatively easy. As with any major project, you should carefully plan ahead before getting started.
To prepare the room for easier installation, turn off water and electrical supply then remove the old countertops, cabinets and appliances.
2. Locate the studs
Use a stud finder to determine the exact location of the studs in the walls. Using a level, trace vertical lines from floor to ceiling, marking the layout of the studs.
3. Take measurements
When taking measurements, keep in mind that the height of the cabinets can differ from one manufacturer to another. The measurements given below are for information only.
Starting at the highest point if the floor is uneven, measure 88 cm (34 1/2 in.) from the floor. Using a level, create a horizontal line along the walls to indicate the top of the base cabinets. For the upper cabinets, trace a second horizontal line 137 cm (54 in.) from the ground. This line indicates the position of the bottom of the upper cabinets.
4. Anchor the support boards
Screw the temporary 1 × 3's into the studs along the line indicating the bottom of the upper cabinets. Repeat this operation for all the walls that will have upper cabinets. This board will support the cabinets during installation and ensure that they are level.
