1. Find the blocking

Use a stud-finder to find the blocking between the studs where you are planning to install the wash basin. This blocking should have been put in place when the walls were built.

2. Locate the lavatory

In order to determine the precise location of the wash basin, place the pedestal where you eventually want it, and lay the wash basin on it temporarily, with the help of someone who can hold it. Use a pencil to trace the perimeter of the pedestal on the floor and the outline of the upper part of the wash basin on the wall. Also mark the locations of the anchoring holes - from both the base of the pedestal and the back of the wash basin - on the floor and the wall. The wash basin anchoring holes are usually accessible from under the wash basin. Some pedestal wash basins may not require anchoring to the floor.

3. Fix the pedestral

Move the wash basin aside, leaving the pedestal in place, and screw it into the floor using wood screws. Be careful not to overtighten, to avoid damaging the porcelain. If there are no anchoring holes on the pedestal, secure it to the floor using silicone caulk.

4. Attach the wall mounting plate

A wall mounting plate may have been supplied with the lavatory. Attach it to the blocking in the wall, making sure that it will allow you to secure the wash basin to the wall at the correct height. You can buy different types of wall mounting plates for wash basins. This article deals with the type supplied with the wash basin.
