What could be more comforting than a fire blazing in the hearth on a cold winter evening? The pleasant smell of the burning wood, the enveloping heat which warms the heart, the crackling of the fire which brings back childhood memories… The new generation of fireplaces is safer and more energy efficient than the traditional fireplace. Although they are similar, their flames are more attractive and their price, affordable.
There are two different types of fireplace inserts: those for an existing chimney and those for a factory-made insulated chimney. The present article explains how to install a fireplace insert in the firebox of an existing fireplace. This requires the installation of an approved stainless steel chimney liner (flexible or rigid or a combination of the two) which evacuates the combustion gases to the outside. The liner should be continuous from the fireplace insert to the top of the chimney. The installation of an interior deflector improves combustion and is useful when the draft of the chimney is too strong. If the chimney does not draw efficiently, use a gravity damper which will also limit the exhaust of smoke when the glass door is opened.
The finishing of your fireplace includes several elements, notably, the surround and the border as well as the floor protection. You are free to choose the one which best suits your décor.
Preparation
0.1
Measure the firebox of the existing fireplace (height, width and depth) with a tape measure. Write down these measurements and take them with you when you go to chose your fireplace insert. Provide for a gap of 3 mm (1/8 in) between the inside wall of the firebox and the caisson as the caisson expands when it is heated.
0.2
Verify the condition of the fire bricks, the firebox and the chimney conduit and make repairs as needed.
0.3
Remove the damper, taking care not to damage the surface of the chimney. Some dampers, which are attached to the chimney, require extra attention.
0.4
Thoroughly clean the hearth of the existing chimney. Brush the surface with a steel brush to remove any dust, soot or other deposits. It is recommended to apply a layer of black, heat-resistant paint to achieve a uniform colour. To adequately prepare the surface to be painted, we recommend the use of trisodium phosphate.
0.5
Sweep the chimney conduit thoroughly in order to eliminate the soot or other deposits which may have formed.
