Installing bathroom faucet

When it comes to washbasin faucets, there’s something for everyone. There’s no lack of models. Is a faucet easy to install? It’s not a complex operation. If there’s a difficulty, it’s the limited access; so we recommend that you free up the space where you’ll be working. The hour spent with your head under the washbasin to make adjustments and install the mechanical plug will pass more easily.

1. Cut the water supply

Cut your washbasin’s water supply by turning off the shutoffs found on the feed pipes under the washbasin.

If you don’t have shutoffs, shut off the main water, typically located in the basement. Then drain the pipes: you have only to open the house’s other faucets and then open the drain valve in the basement.

2. Loosen the nuts

If you’re making a replacement, loosen the two flexible braided metal lines under the washbasin. Unscrew also the union nuts and lock nuts with a basin wrench. The union nuts hold the feed pipes in place, while the lock nuts are screwed to the faucet tailpieces (metal tubes) to secure the faucet to the washbasin.

Spray the nuts with a penetrating oil such as WD-40, and wait about fifteen minutes. This will help loosen rusty nuts.

3. Remove the faucet and replace old feed pipes

Remove the old faucet. Use a putty knife to scrape old sealer near surface holes. Clean and dry.

Take advantage of the drying time to replace the old feed pipes with flexible stainless steel braided supply lines.

4. Remove the old mechanical plug

If your washbasin is equipped with a mechanical plug you want to replace, follow these steps.
  • Unscrew the nut securing the plug pivot under the washbasin and remove the pivot.

  • Unscrew the nut attached to the siphon, which supports the body of the mechanical plug.

  • Unscrew the nut directly under the base of the washbasin.

  • Remove the visible part of the plug at the bottom of the washbasin.

  • Remove the body of the mechanical plug.
