Installing an electric convection heater

The basic principle behind convectors is simple: surrounding air is drawn into the heater through openings located at the bottom of the convector, heated by an element or elements and diffused into the room through the air grille located at the top of the convector.

Sizing your heater

Convection heaters are available in a range of models and power output levels. To size the heater to your room use the following formula: 1 square foot equals 10W, so a 100 square foot would require a 1000W heater.

Try to place the heater on an exterior wall or under a window.

Types of thermostats

Typically convection heaters are available with an interrelated or a wall mount thermostat. The integrated thermostat has the advantage of constant heat as they are closer to the floor. The only downside is that an integrated thermostat is harder to reach compared to a wall mounted one.

There are several programmable wall mount thermostats that can turn on or off the heater depending on the time of the day.
