Frames and drapes: The finishing touches

Frames and drapes really put the finishing touches on a room by giving it warmth and personality. Using ordinary everyday items, leftover materials and your eye for detail, you can create window treatments and original framed artwork to enhance any room’s decor. Look for inspiration from a colour, a shape or a favourite object, and let your imagination do the rest!

Framed memories

You don’t have to own an Old Masters painting to make an attractive piece of framed art. Mementos or items of sentimental value can be framed artistically to make striking, original pieces. A page from a favourite music score or a holiday snapshot – anything with special meaning can be framed. If wall space is limited, stand the pictures on shelves alongside pretty ornaments. The end result is a look that really says “you” and brings back fond memories every time you pass by!

Once upon a time a princess…

Sparkling green organza drapes under a bold blue valance adorn the window in this fairytale room. The valance was made by simply using pieces of 5/8-in. MDF cut to fit the window. The three pieces were then screwed together and painted blue. Decorative shapes were glued to the front for added interest and texture. To match this cheery window treatment, we introduced accessories in the same tones of blue and green: plush flower cushions, a delicate fabric butterfly on the wall… A dream room fit for a little princess!

Soothing sanctuary

With its harmonious lines, warm neutral tones and carefully chosen, well-arranged accessories, this bathroom is a peaceful and rejuvenating haven in which to start the day or unwind in the evening. The imaginative decor around the tub immediately catches the eye. To make the most of the room’s natural light while protecting the owners’ privacy, we installed Japanese-style sliding screens in front of the window. The frames were built from MDF, which we stained a rich brown colour. Plexiglas panels were cut to fit, covered with rice paper using “Mod Podge” glue, and fastened to the back of the frames with screws. The new panels were then fitted to rails of the type usually used for sliding closet doors. This bathroom’s personalized style and harmonious decor combine to make it an inviting and relaxing space.
