Dehumidifiers

Condensation in the windows, mold problems, etc. Has this happened to you? Maybe you suffer, you and your house, from the consequences caused by excess humidity. A dehumidifier may just be the solution to your problems. The following will help you choose a dehumidifier according to your specific needs.

A humidity problem should never be ignored. Excess humidity in the home can have serious consequences on your health (headaches, chronic fatigue, persistent colds, proliferation of bacteria, etc.) and for your house (mold, deterioration of the furnishings and the framework, etc.). If you notice condensation on the windows or a suction effect when you open an outside door (negative pressure), you must act.

A hydrostatic thermometer

To be entirely sure that it is a humidity problem and not an air circulation problem, use a hydrostatic thermometer. There are two types: mechanical and electronic. A mechanical hydrometer is accurate to 5% and costs less than $10. The electronic variety, much more precise, sells for around $30. A comfortable indoor humidity level ranges from 40% to 55%. However, outdoor temperature can influence the humidity reading. Above 60%, there is a real humidity problem, which can be remedied by the use of a dehumidifier.

Criteria when making your choice

The first criteria that should be considered is the volume that must be dehumidified. Dehumidifiers that are commonly available on the market have capacities from 24 to 40 pints. For good performance, calculate approximately one pint for every 75 square feet. You can also refer to the following table:
HUMIDITY LEVEL :MODERATE HUMIDITY
(45 - 55%)
HIGH HUMIDITY
(55 - 65%)
EXCESSIVE HUMIDITY
(65 - 75%)
EXTREME HUMIDITY

Noise and appearance

The second important element when purchasing a dehumidifier is noise. If the dehumidifier is installed in a little used basement, noise is not a problem. But if children sleep in the basement, their slumber should not be disturbed.

The same can be said for appearance; if installation is in a little used location, a standard model will be fine. However, if it is visible from the main rooms of the house, you may want to select a more visually pleasing model.

The price

If these three criteria, reservoir capacity, noise and appearance, influence your choice, they will also have an influence on the price, which can run between $180 and $250. A reasonable amount when you consider the positive effect on your home, but mainly on your health. Don't you think?

Maintenance

It's very simple to clean the dehumidifier. Regularly clean the filter at the back and remove dirt from the coils.

When you store your dehumidifier at the end of summer, it is important to clean it because mineral deposits from the water tend to form inside the dehumidifier. Remove the pad and the float and soak them in a mixture of water and vinegar to clean them.
