Deck construction materials

An outdoor deck is without a doubt one of the smartest investments one can make. It certainly increases the value of a house but it also creates an outdoor entertaining space. However, it is an ambitious project that involves decision making. The most important issue is probably choosing which material to use to build the deck. Pressure-treated wood is obviously a very common option, but nowadays new solutions, such as composite or plastic, must be considered.

Pressure-Treated Wood

Pressure-treated wood is still the most popular option when it comes to building a deck. Unfortunately, its good reputation has been severely tested over the past few years, after a series of studies showed that products used in the pressure treatment of wood pose potential health and environment risks. But alternatives have been found: CCA (chromated copper arsenate) was banned and replaced by alkaline copper quat (ACQ) or copper azote (CA), both said to be safe. It should also be noted that retailers such as RONA now only offer safe pressure-treated wood.

There are many reasons that explain why pressure-treated wood (usually pine or spruce) is such a popular choice. First, contrary to common beliefs, treated wood is an affordable option. Besides being shock-resistant and really sturdy, pressure-treated wood is quite workable, like any other soft wood. Basic tools can be used, although a special product must be applied on holes and cut ends for maximum efficiency and rot resistance. Also, the products used in the pressure treatment are very corrosive so it is important to use screws specifically designed for this kind of environment: stainless steel screws, hot-dipped galvanized screws or epoxy-coated screws.

Pressure-treated wood is natural, has a warm appeal and grows in a controlled environment. Since weathering changes the colour of pressure-treated wood to silver-grey, it is recommended to coat it with a finishing product. The chemical treatment given to the wood makes it rot resistant, but it doesn’t provide any special protection against ageing. A paint, a stain or a sealant must be applied or the boards will crack and splinter after only a few years. Such products also provide an additional protective coat against stains and dirt. Many options are available, and there are even finishes specially designed for pressure-treated wood.

This maintenance task, which must be repeated periodically, can be long and tedious work. This is why some people say that in the long run, pressure-treated wood is more expensive than other materials such as composite. Besides, paints and stains adhere better to cedar than to treated-wood. Nevertheless, a well-maintained pressure-treated wood deck can last up to 40 years.

Since it is treated with chemicals, precautionary measures must be taken when handling treated lumber. Wearing a mask is very important, not only because of the dust, but also because of the fumes released when the wood is cut. This is also why it is recommended to work and use pressure-treated wood outside only, and to never burn it under any circumstances. Treated lumber can’t be discarded like any other waste; you should contact your local authorities and ask them when and how you should dispose of treated wood.

Cedar

The natural beauty of cedar, its rich colour and its nice texture make it a highly prized material. Also, cedar culture usually takes place in managed forests where reforestation programs ensure a perpetual harvest, making it an ecological choice especially since it is not treated with any chemical agent.

The oils contained in cedar provide a natural decay and insect resistance, so there is no need to stain or paint it. However, in order to keep its rich texture and beautiful look, it is recommended to treat it periodically. That way, a cedar deck can last over 25 years. As mentioned, stains and paints adhere better to cedar than to treated wood, which translates into fewer treatments needed.

Unfortunately, cedar is a soft wood that marks and scratches easily. It is less sturdy than pressure-treated wood, which means it can’t be used as the under structure of the deck. Nevertheless, cedar is a light and easy-to-work material. When handled, no precautionary measures are required other than to wear gloves and safety goggles.
