Dressing windows, large or small, deserves your attention. Windows allow natural light into a room and give its decor a particular touch.
You will find countless window treatments on the market: wooden slat blinds, fabric blinds, sliding panels, curtains and veiling. You will also find that, more and more, transparency and veiling are preferred in many a decorating project.
Veiling is graceful, transparent and a touch misty in appearance. Over the past few years, it has become available in a variety of colours and patterns, all quite stunning. Marbled motifs are matched to gilding, while tone on tone and flowered patterns are juxtaposed to plain. Veiling can be draped over a co-ordinated fabric or over another "plein jour" (see-though) veiling. Tied on the side with an attractive cord or crowned with a heavier fabric and hanging from wooden or metal rings, veiling becomes more than a simple adornment.
Whether made of polyester, cotton or linen, whether plain, striped or flowered, used as window decoration or as a complement to draperies, sheers are back in our homes. It is being used for theatrical effect as decorative draperies, for loose or French-pleated curtains, draped over a rod or as a bed canopy. And why not use it as a shower curtain? Lined with a plain plastic curtain, it can add a touch of elegance to a bathroom. However, it is important to be mindful of its quality and sometimes difficult maintenance.
Characteristics of sheers
On one hand, polyester sheers are easy to maintain. On the other, cotton and linen sheers will seduce you with its rich textures. Their flowered patterns, abstract motifs and wide stripes will give your decor an outstanding finishing touch. But be mindful of the fabric's softness. Many of the fabrics on the market will not flow into the gracious pleats you need for elegant decor. Instead, they will break into rigid folds that may ruin the look of your windows.
Sizes and quantity
You should make every effort to select suitable veiling. It spells the difference between beautiful and merely acceptable windows. Plain veiling is usually sold in lengths of 118 in. while good patterned veiling is sold in 54-in. widths.
You should know the precise dimensions of your window in order to calculate the required width of veiling. Allow for three to five pleats for a nice French pleat, two to two and a half for light draping and one to one and a half for suspended or ring drapes. Also be sure to provide for a minimum two-inch clearance from radiators.
Hardware
You will find a variety of installation accessories on the market. Wooden or cast iron rods, hooks, clips, rigid tiebacks, trimming material and brackets, just to name a few. There is a style for every taste from the sophisticated to the original. Just take the time to look around and you will find something that will suit you.
Sheers are making a remarkable comeback! Use them alone or with blinds, shades or drapes. Why not with a pelmet.
