Vinyl siding is made from tough material but it can be damaged by the heat of a barbecue, being bumped on a cold winter day or is hit hard by a heavy object. However, the vinyl siding panels can easily be replaced in a few hours following a few simple steps and using some every day tools.
The key to a clean repair is the siding removal tool that can be used to reach behind the panels and unhook the snug fitting lock system. Before putting on the new panel the wall can be examined and, if necessary, repaired. For a smooth transition panels can be taken from another part of the home and replaced with new ones that may not have the same color tone.

GOOD TO KNOW
Make sure you note the measurements, brand and colour of your vinyl siding.
Since vinyl siding fades over time, it is better to replace a damaged panel on a highly visible wall with one from a less visible wall (such as your home’s back wall). The new siding panels can then be installed where the difference in colour will be less obvious.
When you install new siding, always save a few boards to ensure that you have the same colour and model of siding on hand if ever a panel breaks.
Buy a siding removal tool. For less than $5, it is a good investment and makes the job go easier.
Note that the technique described here also applies to aluminum siding, except that vinyl is a much more flexible material and thus easier to work with than aluminum.
NAILING TIPS
• Drive nails through the center of the nail slots.
• Be sure to drive nails horizontally.
• Do not drive nails in completely so as to leave room for the siding to expand and contract with changing temperatures.
CUTTING TIPS
Cut the panels widthwise with a utility knife. To cut them lengthwise use a circular saw with a fine-toothed blade.
Steps
1.1. Insert a siding removal tool into the centre of J-channel of the damaged siding to loosen the section located just above.
1.2. Run the siding removal tool from the centre toward each end unhooking the overlapping siding. Pull downward during the motion. The upper section, corner mouldings and trim pieces, which are grooved, should stay in place.
1.3. Remove the nails that hold the damaged siding to the furring with a pry bar. It might be necessary to cut the nails.
1.4. Push downward on the damaged panel to release its lower lip from the piece below.
2.1. Measure the length of the section of siding to be replaced, adding at least one 3" to allow the vinyl to expand, giving 1 ½" overlap on each end.
2.2. Cut the siding piece to the required length with a utility knife.
3.1. Line up the new piece in place overlapping by 1 ½" on each side.
3.2. Snap the lip of the new section into the J-channel of the piece below.
3.3. Starting at the centre and moving toward each end of the piece, nail the section to the furring. Nail 12" appart in the centre, at a 90o angle and stick out 1/32"Push in the nails with a pry bar as they are nailed. They should be hammered in loosely, so that the siding can expand.
3.4. Use the siding removal tool to hook the siding above into the J-channel of the new section. Make sure the siding lip is not sitting directly in the bottom of the J-channel, in order to leave room for the siding to expand.
3.5. Pushed the upper panel into position using the siding removal tool to stretch the lower lip of the panel above it downward so it can snap into place.
3.6. Make sure all panels are secured in place.
